VR visualization of custom built homes

In order to accommodate the wide range of personalized customizations offered for their construction projects, the architectural company Lind & Risør has released an app based on the visualization platform developed by Intertisement.

Lind & Risør

Overall concept and background
The app utilizes Virtual Reality (VR) features in order to provide the user with an engaging and insightful experience.

More specifically, when a customer orders a new home, a range of new visualization options can be offered through the Lind & Risør app. It is possible to take a virtual tour of the house before construction is commenced, thereby making it possible to utilize the app as a valuable tool during the initial decision making process.

It can often be challenging for a customer to visualize the wide range of options only based on blueprints and the readily available product information. A more visual and immersive approach helps all the parties involved in the process to achieve a common understanding of the consequences of a given choice.

This realization inspired Lind & Risør to search for potential collaborators who could help them develop a powerful visualization tool capable of solving this key issue as well as having the potential to be expanded into a more advanced platform covering additional aspects of the construcion process in the future. Intertisement was a good match due to considerable experience in both 3D-visualization and specialization in development of tools for the construction industry, embodied by the award winning Planimetria platform.

Solution and supported platforms
Intertisement has supplied a complete app-solution including UI implementation, VR visualization features as well as a web-based backend system for managing the content pipeline and ongoing communication during content creation.

The app is available for both iOS and Android phones and tablets, and is downloadable from the Apple App Store and Google Play, respectively. The users are given a choice of exploring a range of predefined concept homes for inspiration as well as the option to experience their own personal home, including all the custom choices defined in collaboration with the construction company during the initial decision making process.

Initially, the 3D models are rendered in black and white in order to make the customer focus on the main architectural features rather than specific visual details, such as colors and materials. However, future versions may offer additional features such as the ability to illustrate the customer’s personal choice of materials, wall colors and furnishing.

The app offers a range of different ways of interacting with the 3D tour by either dragging a finger on the screen to look around or using the device’s gyroscope to provide a more immersive experience. Pressing and holding the screen will enable the user to move freely around the environment, only constrained by the physical boundaries of the 3D-model. Furthermore, support for Google Cardboard V2 with stereoscopic rendering provides an additional level of immersion by increasing spatial awareness.

Future development
We plan to expand the visualization platform in the future with additional features, making it an essential tool for people in the demanding situation of acquiring a new custom built home. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or if your business is facing similar challenges – we offer a range of software solutions which can be adapted to suit your specific needs.
